2024 Backyard Bird Photography Sessions

WHAT TO EXPECT*

Whether you are a seasoned pro or are new to photography, you can discover backyard bird photography during this two-day birding session. Participants will be photographing from “The Nut House,” a custom-built photo-blind that can comfortably accommodate up to five photographers. Carl has spent years developing his backyard birding oasis. All of the landscaping has been thoughtfully chosen to provide plenty of natural food and cover for a wide variety of bird species. In addition, he has added attractions like a natural-looking water feature, which has proven to attract birds. Natural-looking perches have been carefully placed throughout to give a nice variety of clean backgrounds, as well as some more environmentally-focused shots.

*Please Note: These are wild birds, and I can't guarantee their activity levels on any given day. I choose dates based on when I expect the birds to be most active.

Spring (April-May) is typically the peak season for bird activity, though there can still be slow days. Fall (late September-October) can be hit or miss, with varying activity levels, but it’s an excellent time for observing migrating warblers. In winter (January-February), birds usually visit feeders consistently, as their natural food sources are limited.

While I can’t promise an incredible birding experience, you will definitely see birds and have the chance to capture some great photos. The quantity and variety of species, however, depend on the birds and the weather—factors I unfortunately can’t control.

WHAT TO BRING

It is recommended that participants have at least a 300mm lens, however, a lens in the 400-600mm range is preferred. The birds will be relatively close, anywhere from eight feet to twenty feet away. While the birds have become accustomed to the presence of photographers in the blind, slow intentional movements are recommended. It is also a good idea to avoid wearing brightly colored clothing. Please note, The Nut House is not heated or cooled, so dress accordingly.
